NFLPA “Pay Yourself First” CAMPAIGN

THE WORK

The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) is the union for professional players in the National Football League. The NFLPA reached out to Athlitacomics to help create a unique and fun way to introduce their new app to players and reinforce the importance that financial wellness is gained from smart spending habits.

THE INTENT

The NFLPA wanted the campaign to catch the attention of the players so they would download the app and start using it to invest in themselves. The desired takeaway of the campaign was for players to internalize the five easy steps of using the app, which was designed to help them save more money. It was important to have the campaign be educational and informative, but with an upbeat tone.

THE EXECUTION

Athlitacomics provided the character design and storyboarding for the concept, which was developed into an animated video using simple graphic novel style parallax animations and comic book style word bubbles throughout. The video opens in a high-end club with three players being approached by a server with flaming champagne bottles, who asks them if they’d like VIP bottle service.

When one of the players is ready to spend big, another player jumps in to caution him that throwing away a month’s rent on one bottle isn’t worth.  The prudent player tells the other two to “Invest in yourself,” and he demonstrates how easy it is to use the app. 

THE RESULT

The 45-second animated video was distributed to players through an email campaign and on the NFLPA website. It performed well and the NFLPA was very pleased stating, “Awesome job as always!” Hailed as robust but succinct, the video did a great job conveying the information in a fun, digestible way.
